Follow these top tips for driving in the snow

As one of our Indiana readers, you know that snow is a big part of the winter season. While it's ideal to stay indoors when the snow begins to fall, this is not always possible. There's a good chance that you'll need to hit the road, such as to commute to and from work.

With this in mind, it's important that you know what you can do to improve your safety when driving in snowy conditions. Here are a few ideas to consider:

  • Make slow accelerations and decelerations. If you don't do this, you'll lose traction, thus increasing the chance of an accident.
  • Slow down. Even if you are in a hurry to reach your destination, you need to slow down and pay attention to what's going on around you. It takes longer to stop on snowy roads, so you need to keep your speed to a minimum.
  • Leave more space between vehicles. Once again, this all comes down to the fact that stopping your vehicle in snowy conditions can be a challenge.
  • Don't stop when moving uphill. This is not always possible, but it's something you should try to avoid. If you stop your vehicle, you may not be able to start back up.
  • Watch for others who may be making mistakes. You aren't the only person on the road. For this reason, you aren't the only person who could cause an accident. You should keep a close watch on those around you, such as people who are driving too fast or not paying attention to the road.

Everyone hopes for a mild winter, but you never know when a snow storm will hit your area. If it does, you need to adjust the way you drive.

In the event of an accident, move your car to safety and stay where you are until police and an ambulance arrive. Getting out of your vehicle, in traffic, will increase your chance of being part of another accident.

Once you receive medical treatment, you can learn more about the cause of the accident and how to protect your legal rights.
