There is more to nursing home abuse than physical injuries

There are millions of people throughout the United States residing in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.

While most of these facilities are dedicated to providing nothing but the best care at all times, there are instances when things take a turn for the worse. For example, a staff member could begin to abuse a resident.

Despite the fact that there are both federal and state laws in place to protect the rights of nursing home residents, abuse and neglect remain a major issue throughout the United States. Taking this one step further, there is more than one form of abuse.

It's easy to believe that nursing home abuse is limited to physical injuries, but you should consider these other circumstances:

-- Verbal and emotional abuse. This occurs when a patient is subjected to any form of verbal aggression, including but not limited to humiliation, intimidation and threats.

-- Sexual abuse. One of the most violent forms of abuse, this occurs when a staff member has non-consensual sexual contact with a resident.

-- Financial exploitation. This is the result of a nursing home exploiting a resident's financial situation, such as by overcharging for services.

At our law firm, we are serious about protecting the health and well-being of nursing home residents.

If you or a loved one has been abused in a nursing home or long-term care facility, there's no time to wait around. It's a must to report the abuse and then learn more about your legal rights. An attorney can help you learn what legal options you have.
