A man from New Albany, Indiana, has been killed after the vehicle he was in was struck by another vehicle while he was trying to help someone whose car had broken down on I-64 in Floyd County.
There were four vehicles involved in the tragic accident that occurred on March 14 about 11:30 p.m. The accident happened in the westbound lanes close to mile marker 120. The deceased man was in his truck when a 2002 black Ford Focus smashed into the back of it. The victim’s truck and the broken down vehicle were in the emergency lane. A tow truck was also on the scene.
According to reports, the 20-year-old driver of the Focus struck the victim’s pickup after her vehicle swerved into the emergency lane. The victim’s truck burst into flames after it was hit and he was not able to get out of the truck. He was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
The man whose vehicle had broken down was a friend of the victim’s. The initial crash pushed the truck into the broken down vehicle and the tow truck. The driver of the tow truck and the driver of the vehicle that broke down were both injured in the accident. According to reports, their injuries were minor. The driver of the Focus was not injured.
The accident is still under investigation by the Floyd County police.
